Oliver McCabe: Organic Odyssey

Oliver McCabe, affectionately known as “Organic Ollie”, has made a name for himself in Ireland’s organic and wholefoods sector. His journey began in Dalkey, Dublin, where his parents established Select Stores in 1959 - a corner store greengrocer and fuel merchant that would shape his life’s path. Losing his father at a young age, Oliver found himself immersed in the family business early, developing a natural affinity for food preparation and a passion for fresh produce.

In 2001, after time spent abroad, Oliver returned to Ireland to breathe new life into Select Stores, transitioning it from a traditional grocer to an independent health store, juice bar, and café. His mission: to make organic, allergen-friendly foods accessible, and educate the community on the benefits of organic produce. His dedication earned him the nickname “Organic Ollie,” and his store quickly became a vibrant hub for health-conscious locals.

Throughout his career, Oliver collaborated extensively with the Organic Trust, sourcing produce from Irish farmers and supporting local organic suppliers. His innovative approach to food and nutrition led him to study nutritional therapy and train as a whole food chef. This experience culminated in his popular cookbook, ’Fuel Food’, released in 2016, followed by ’Kids Kitchen Takeover’ in 2023, which encouraged children to cook confidently with whole foods.

Oliver’s advocacy for organic living extends beyond his store. Over the years, he’s given cooking demonstrations, partnered with Viridian Nutrition on educational apps, set up his own health food and wellness consultancy company ‘Hubble Health’ and served as an ambassador for Health Stores Ireland. His handson work with schools and non-profits aims to equip young people with essential cooking skills, fostering lifelong health and connection to food.

In 2024, Oliver headlined the kid’s education stage at the Organic Trust National Organic Food Fair alongside Veganza Animal Hero, where he encouraged families to embrace organic cooking and appreciate Ireland’s local produce. He has certainly made significant contributions to Irish food culture through the years with his emphasis on health, community, education and sustainability!
