Organic Certification for Professional organic producers, processors and distributors
If you are interested in converting your holding to organic production or in processing, retailing or distributing a product to be labelled as ‘organic’, then follow this link for 5 easy steps and your application will be underway.
The Organic Trust is the centre of excellence when it comes to organic inspection and certification in Ireland. The very broad range of organic technical expertise available within our organisation is at your service.
The Department of Agriculture, Food & The Marine offers a range of financial incentives to assist those interested in getting involved in organic production. In addition capital grants are available for the purchase of specific equipment
The general principle of producing organic food requires that seed and vegetative propagating material produced by the organic production method be used. Due to the unavailability of certain seeds within the European Union, it may be possible to use seed and vegetative propagating material that is not produced by the organic production method.
In Ireland, two private inspection bodies (i.e. Irish Organic Farmers and Growers Association and the Organic Trust Limited) give the required formal permission to the producer to use seed and vegetative propagating material that has not been produced by the organic production method. Producers should ensure that the prior approval of the inspection body is obtained before using such seeds.
A database has been developed for users showing the seed and vegetative propagating material that is registered and available here in Ireland.
The database is available here - Department of Agriculture and Food
OrganicXseeds is an organic seed database for Europe. The organisation responsible for the database is FiBL (Research Institute of Organic Agriculture) in Switzerland, in cooperation with SA(Soil Association) and NIAB in England, AIAB in Italy, the LBI (Lois Bolk Institut) and the Stichting Zaadgoed in Holland and the German working group ALOG.
Irish Seed Savers Association exists as a living testimony to the richness and wealth of the agricultural legacy of our ancestors. Irish Seed Savers Association was founded by Anita Hayes in 1991. The work was initially done on a small farm in Co. Carlow before moving to Capparoe, Scarriff in 1996.We were very fortunate to have the help of Dr. Keith Lamb who had conducted the original research into native Irish apples in the 1940s and Dr. Michael Hennerty former head of the Department of Horticulture in University College Dublin who has continued to provide wisdom and expertise. In 1996 the project moved to its present site in Scariff and in 1997 a FAS community employment scheme developed by Bridget Carlin secured employment for many staff.
Through the hard work of staff, volunteers and the generosity of subscribers and friends of Irish Seed Savers we have grown steadily since that time.

More than fifteen years in organic seed production.
Enter Bejo’s world during the company’s annual Open Days, which this year take place in the Dutch town Warmenhuizen from Tuesday 24 September until Saturday 28 September 2013. Every year thousands of visitors from all over the world come to the company’s head office in Warmenhuizen to meet one another, exchange knowledge and learn all about the latest developments in the vegetable sector.
New this year will be an “organic route”, which will guide visitors on a tour of the company’s organic demonstration field and interesting trials such as non-inversion tillage, ridge cultivation of onions and beetroot, and a leek trial involving a herb that deters insects. Guided tours in the company’s warehouse shows Bejo’s new packaging department for organic seed.
Vegetable varieties and mechanisation
During its open days, Bejo will be showing its vegetable varieties in the standard and organic demonstration field. There, visitors will be able to admire new varieties alongside Bejo’s current range. Many of the varieties were planted at different times.
As in previous years, Bejo has invited several companies to participate in the mechanisation exhibition The exhibitors will be presenting their latest innovations, varying from fully automatic planting machines and camera-controlled hoeing techniques to harvesting machines and lines for processing harvested crops. Companies specialising in storage technology and crop care will also be exhibiting.
Subject to the right conditions, there will be demonstrations of planting machines and mechanical weed-control techniques. Visitors will also be able to see a mechanical cabbage harvester in action. Machines for processing harvested produce will also be proving their worth at various stalls.
Introduction of Coolwrap and Léttage
Bejo is introducing two new cabbage concepts this year. The name ‘Coolwrap’ has been given to square leaves of a flat white cabbage with a mild flavour specifically selected for use as wraps, in sushi or as parts of healthy sandwiches. The second concept is ‘Léttage’, covering a selection of cabbage varieties with a mild, sweet flavour. Cabbage is a very nutritious vegetable that remains crisp for a long time. This makes Léttage particularly suitable for healthy, tasty salads. “These concepts are our way of meeting the growing demand for tasty, healthy vegetables that can be easily prepared,” says Perry Kuilboer, Bejo’s sales manager for the Benelux. “Varieties of these concepts can be seen in our demonstration field, but visitors will also be able to taste them, along with our healthy purple sprouting broccoli and curly kale varieties, in the delicious snacks that will be prepared during our cooking demonstrations.”
The Open Days will take place at Trambaan 1 in Warmenhuizen from Tuesday 24 September until Saturday 28 September, from 9 am until 5 pm (on Saturday until 4 pm). You can notify your contact person at Bejo of your intended visit.
