Update on Avian Flu HPAI H5N6

News | 13 Mar 2018

Please see attached update on the situation with AI since our last update on the 8th March – summarised as follows:

Avian influenza subtype H5N6 has been confirmed in another white tailed sea eagle.

The bird was found dead on Cribby Island, Mountshannon, Co. Clare on the 06 March 2018.
This is the third positive wild bird finding in Ireland this year.
The H5N6 virus that was detected in a common buzzard on the 06 March 2018 has been confirmed as highly pathogenic, as was expected.

The situation in Ireland and other EU countries is being kept under constant review and no additional control measures will be introduced at this point.
The advice to flock owners is still to remain vigilant to the threat of avian influenza and take specific measures to protect their flocks including minimising access to wild birds by feeding poultry indoors for example.

Specific biosecurity advice can be found here: https://www.agriculture.gov.ie/avian_influenza/biosecurityadvice/

Flock owners are also reminded to update their flock registration details. On-line registration is now possible. Full details can be found here.
