Update on Avian Flu HPAI H5N6

News | 02 Jul 2018

Please see attached update on the situation with Avian Influenza

The most recent outbreaks or events include:

  • Two Greylag geese, found dead in Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland on 22 June 2018, tested positive for HPAI H5N6 subtype.
  • Denmark detected a LPAI H5 subtype in a flock of game birds (mallard ducks).
  • Sweden have also detected LPAI H5 subtype on a poultry premises (pheasants and chickens).
  • The HPAI H5N8 subtype was confirmed on a poultry farm in Bulgaria on 13 June 2018.
  • There has been no cases of avian influenza in wild birds in Ireland since 15 March 2018.

Although the risk to Ireland from avian influenza is now low due to the departure of wild migratory waterfowl and increased environmental temperatures and sunlight hours, flock owners including owners of backyard poultry are still advised to remain vigilant and implement biosecurity measures – in particular by feeding birds indoors or under cover. Specific biosecurity advice can be found here:    https://www.agriculture.gov.ie/avian_influenza/biosecurityadvice/

Flock owners are also reminded to update their flock registration details. On-line registration is now possible.
