Re-opening of the Organic Farming Scheme - Open November 19th - Closing Date December 19th

News | 19 Nov 2018

Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Andrew Doyle T.D., has announced the re-opening of the Organic Farming Scheme (OFS) with immediate effect. The OFS is a scheme under Ireland’s Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 to support organic production on Irish farms. The closing date for applications for payment under this tranche of the Scheme is December 19th 2018.

For new applicants in 2018, a ranking and selection process will be put in place that will give priority to the areas that are deemed to be in deficit i.e. organic cereals, dairy and horticulture.

If you wish to apply for payments under the Organic Farming Scheme, you must be registered on www.agfood.ie in the first instance (if you are not already  registered).  You can register by clicking on this link: https://agfood.agriculture.gov.ie/ssoauthagfood/individual/IndividualLogin.htm - then follow the sequence of events indicated on the Organic Trust Applications Page:  http://organictrust.ie/applications/ i.e.

  • Phone Organic Trust 01 8530271 and request an application pack - alternatively download the application documentation from  the Applications Section of this website per above link.
  • Complete page 1 of the blue Org.1 registration form, sign the bottom and return it immediately to the Organic Trust office.
  • The Organic Trust will then request that DAFM activate an 'organic' entry on your www.agfood.ie registration which will facilitate you making the on-line OFS application by 5 pm on 19.12.2018.
  • Then complete the Organic Trust application documentation and submit this to Organic Trust, together with all items specified on the final page of the application form, by 31.12.2018.
  • Organic Trust will then arrange an early 2019 inspection of your farm.

Notes:

  • The Organic Farming Scheme is an agri-environment measure under the Department's Rural Development Programme 2014-2020. The Scheme is co-funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD).
  • Farmers enter into a contract for a minimum of five years, with standard rate payments of up to €220 per hectare a year during the conversion period and up to €170 per hectare when they have achieved full organic status.
  • Higher payment rates are available for organic horticultural and tillage farmers
  • Latest figures indicate that there are now some 72,000 hectares under organic production, an increase of nearly 50% on the position at the start of the Programme in 2014.
  • Closing date for applications will be 19 December, 2018. Applications for the scheme must be made online, and there will be no requirement to use an Agricultural Advisor to make the application
